Just in time for the first day of school, Andover High School got some good news: the school was ranked 12th on Boston magazine’s top public high schools within the Interstate 495 belt.

The closely-watched annual list ranked 151 public high schools on a range of factors, including class size, student-to-teacher ratio and, of course, standardized test and SAT scores. AHS was sixth on the list for average class size, with 8.6 students per class.

  14. Westford Academy
  15. Westborough
  16. Lexington
  17. Sharon
  18. Hopkinton
  19. Newton
  20. Needham

  • Enrollment: 1,679
  • Average Class Size: 8.6
  • Student-to-teacher ration:13.1:1
  • Proficient or higher on MCAS English Language Arts: 81%
  • Proficient or higher on MCAS Math: 75%
  • Average reading/writing SAT: 607
  • Average math SAT: 611
  • Graduation rate: 98%
  • Attending college: 87.1
  • Proficiency in educator evaluations: 83.5%
  • Exemplary in educator evaluations: 15.7%
  • Median home price: $840,000
  • Median income: $153,315

    How are income and home price part of the assessment?

    1. Income and home prices were included in Boston magazine’s methodology, and was used to compile a list of high school’s offering “biggest bang for your (housing) buck.” Needless to say, Andover did not make the list in that category.
