When former Andover High School quarterback E.J. Perry told his Jacksonville Jaguars teammates he had never eaten at Waffle House, quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s wife went into action.
Marissa Lawrence made a reservation at Waffle House, and about 20 Jaguars players — including offensive lineman Brandon Scherff, who, like Perry, had never eaten at Waffle House — ate there Tuesday to celebrate the team’s come-from-behind playoff win of the Los Angeles Charges on Saturday.

Perry, 24, is Trevor Lawrence’s backup and the son of AHS head football coach E.J. Perry III. Perry was a four-year starter at Andover High School and set a single-game state record with 636 passing yards in his junior year. In 2017, his senior year, Perry was named the Boston Globe’s Division I football player of the year after passing for 3,398 yards and 47 touchdowns, tying the state record. He finished his high school career with 8,712 passing yards and 114 touchdown, both of which are second in Massachusetts high school football history.
Waffle House has 1,900 locations in 25, mostly southern states. The closest Waffle House to Andover is 308 miles away in Clark’s Summit, Penn.
There was some playful teasing on Twitter about Marissa Lawrence’s attempt to make a reservation at the greasy spoon known throughout the south as a late-night destination following a night out, but Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was not among those poking fun at his rival’s wife. When asked about Jacksonville’s team outing at a news conference Tuesday, Mahomes called Marissa Lawrence’s brainstorm “a baller move.”
The Jaguars will play at Kansas City in an NFL divisional round playoff game at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
