The return of after-school detention was one of the changes to the Andover High School handbook the Andover School Committee reviewed at its meeting Thursday. The school had halted after-school decisions during the coronavirus pandemic.

“When we were in COVID we were not keeping after school and doing detentions during the day,” AHS Principal Caitlin Brown (right in photo above). “So we are changing that back to after school and wanted to make that clear throughout the handbook.”

While many of the changes simply updated dates for the 2022-23 school year, there were policy changes around peer mediation, grading, weighting of exams and locker assignments. All the changes and updates, which were unanimously approved by the school committee, can be found in the meeting packet.

“We’re really looking to make peer mediation a part of our school and help students work out their differences before they reach us,” Brown said. “We really wanted to make sure students have a chance to work it out among themselves.”
