The Andover Health Division renewed its warning for residents to avoid the Merrimack River for 48 hours following another discharge of untreated or partially-treated wastewater Lowell Wastewater Treatment Facility.

The most recent dump happened between 10:01 a.m. and 3:08 p.m. Tuesday, and came just 24 hours after an earlier overflow at the plant. The sewerage discharge increases health risks from bacteria and other pollutants for people who come into contact with the water.

Overflows occur when stormwater runoff is too much for the sewage system to process.
