Forecasters continued to rise expected snow totals for Andover and the rest of the Merrimack Valley from a winter storm that is being accompanied by damaging wind gusts.

As of 9:45 Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service had upped its snowfall projections for northeastern Massachusetts. Andover is now expected to get eight to 12 inches today and an additional one to three inches tonight as the storm winds down.

Large parts of western Massachusetts woke up without power Tuesday morning. Andover is under a winter storm warning until 8 a.m. Wednesday, with the worst of the storm expected Tuesday afternoon.

“Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” the National Weather Service warned. “The hazardous conditions could impact both the morning and evening commutes on Tuesday. Strong winds could cause tree damage.”

As of 9:33 a.m., nearly 70,000 Massachusetts electric customers were without power. With power outages possible as the storm moves east, keep the following reminders and resources handy for the duration of the storm:

  • If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle.
  • Stay away from and report downed power lines by calling 911 or 800-465-1212.
  • To report downed tress, call the forestry division at 978-623-8780.
  • To report downed trees tangled in utility wires, call Andover police at 978-623-3500 and press 0 for Dispatch.
  • National Grid outage line: 800-465-1212

Cancellations, Delays and Closures

  • Trash and recycling collections were canceled around 1:50 p.m. Tuesday for the remainder of the day. Collections will resume on Wednesday for those not collected. The Wednesday – Friday routes will be collected as scheduled.
  • The Robb Center is closing at noon Tuesday.
  • Memorial Hall Library is closing at noon on Tuesday. All afternoon and evening programs are canceled/postponed.
    • “Dietary Choices to Help Save the Planet,” which had been scheduled for 7 p.m. at Memorial Hall Library on Tuesday, has been postponed until April 11 at West Parish Church.
  • Andover Public Schools will have an early release day (elementary schools dismissed at 12:15, high school, middle schools and preschools dismissed at 11:15). Afternoon preschool and school activities are canceled.
