A three-sport Andover High School athlete received one of the state’s top honors for high school sports.
Senior Rose MacLean was one of four students named Athletes of the Year at the 37th Boston Globe Foundation/Richard J. Phelps Scholar-Athlete Award ceremony. MacLean led the 17-4-2 Warriors to the girls’ state hockey semi-finals. The Eagle-Tribune called her game-winning goal with 7 seconds left in the tournament’s quarterfinals “perhaps the biggest goal in Andover High girls hockey history.”
MacLean was also on the Andover High School field hockey team, which won its second-straight state title last fall. The Eagle-Tribune has also twice named her a girls’ lacrosse all-star.
Perry Gets First Pro Win
Former Andover High School quarterback E.J. Perry IV went 12 of 23 passes for 121 yards with 48 rushing yards and a touchdown to lead the Michigan Panthers to a 23-20 win over Philadelphia to start the USFL season on Saturday.
It was the first professional football win for Perry, who was the third-string quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season and waived by the Houston Texans last month after a series of off-season moves.
“I could’ve just waited and tried to hook on with another NFL team. But then I realized other NFL guys were working out [in minicamps],” Perry told the Eagle-Tribune. “For me, it was the opportunity to do something, work on my game. And improve.”
AHS Shines In Football All-Star Game
AHS’s Lincoln Beal caught a game-winning touchdown with 0.8 seconds left in the North’s 17-14 win in the 45th Shriner’s All-Star Football Classic Saturday. Andrew Wetterwald nailed the extra point for Beal’s touchdown. Beal will play for Phillips Academy next year, while Wetterwald is off to Trinity College.
