The Andover Stop & Shop was not among the eight Massachusetts stores the company announced last week would be permanently closing.
Stop & Shop announced the closings in May, leading to speculation the Andover store on North Main Street could close. Stop & Shop said the closings are part of an effort to “position the company for growth.”
“Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand,” Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in a news release.
The stores slated for closing are in Brockton, Raynham, Halifax, Shrewsbury, Newton, Springfield, Worcester and Pembroke. The company is also closing five stores in Connecticut, 10 in New Jersey, seven in New York and two in Rhode Island for a total of 32.
