APS Open For Classes On Veterans Day

The Andover School Committee approved the 2023-24 calendar with a first and second reading last October, which included the change.

At the Oct. 6, 2022 school committee meeting, member Tracey Spruce said that state guidance said holidays that fall on Saturdays should be observed on Saturday — not on the day before. “I would like to see Nov. 10 as a school day, not a non-school day,” Spruce said.

But the change seemingly went unnoticed by many district families — some of whom had already planned getaways for a long weekend.

“As a parent, I feel like I should do the right thing and not pull them,” one woman who had already booked a family trip posted on Andover Cares about our Schools & Town, a local Facebook discussion group.

“Pull your kids!” another responded. “It’s not the end of the world if they miss a day!”

Students in grades 1-12 have Monday off for parent-teacher conferences. Most other school districts in the area, including North Andover, North Reading, Wilmington, and Tewksbury, are not open on Friday.
