Three catalytic converters were stolen from cars parked in Andover in the early-morning hours Tuesday.
Two thefts on Washington Park Drive were reported to Andover police on Tuesday morning, and a third on Railroad Street was reported on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Andover police log. We’ve asked Andover police for more details and will update this story when we hear back.
Catalytic converters can be stolen in a matter of minutes.
Reports of catalytic converters in the U.S. have jumped 1,125 percent since 2019. The devices, which clean car emissions, contain platinum, palladium or rhodium, all of which have seen their values rise in recent years. Thieves are more likely to target light trucks, which allow for easy access.
Insurance companies and police recommend drivers park their car in a garage, if possible, to deter theft. Otherwise, park in a well-lit area or in places where you can install a security camera.
