An Elm Street restaurant that has been a Downtown fixture for 30 years announced it had closed late Wednesday night.

Palmer’s Restaurant & Tavern thanked customers for their support in a Facebook post but gave no reason for the closing. “After 30 wonderful years of serving this incredible community, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the permanent closure of Palmers Restaurant,” the post said.

Palmer’s was closed for nearly two years during the coronavirus pandemic.

John Palmer Ingalls opened Palmer’s in Swampscott in 1988 and moved the business to Andover in 1995. Before Palmer’s took over, the building at 18-20 Elm Street had been a funeral home.

In 2008, actors Elisabeth Shue and Thomas Hayden Church filmed a dinner scene on the second floor.
