A mosquito sample collected in Andover by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health tested positive for West Nile, a potentially deadly virus.

The virus was found in Culex pipiens mosquitos, which feed on birds. No West Nile was detected in mosquitos that feed on mammals.

The Andover test raised the statewide West Nile risk level from low to moderate, DPH said in a news release. The Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District will not, however, be spraying for mosquitos because of lower temperatures. Instead, they will treat water bodies in Andover where mosquitos breed.

West Nile is a mosquito-borne virus with the potential to cause a range of illnesses, from mild fever to more severe conditions such as encephalitis or meningitis. DPH recommends wearing long sleeves and pants when you go out between dusk and dawn, using repellents that contain DEET, and getting rid of standing water on your property.
