This School Committee election has become increasingly contentious, with a level of negativity that is frankly disappointing.
We’ve seen mudslinging, mischaracterizations, and attempts to distract from the real issues facing our schools. I have tried to stay quiet, research the candidates and support the ones I align with in practical ways. I have not spent a lot of time writing opinion letters to the papers or on social media, trying to shout louder than the next person.
But, it’s time to cut through the noise and focus on what truly matters: the qualifications and character of the candidates.
I’ve been a resident of Andover and a parent in our school system for 12+ years. I’ve always believed in engaging in respectful dialogue and focusing on solutions. But the tactics being employed in this election demand a response.
My first real exposure to the dynamics of local elections came when a friend ran for office. I witnessed firsthand how invaluable the support and guidance (or endorsement) of current or former school committee members can be, it was one of the contributing factors in my friend’s defeat (despite the AEA endorsement). Beyond financial resources, candidates must learn the nuances of running a campaign, the rules, what to report to the town, how you can fundraise, what groups to connect with, how to advertise (there were even campaign stickers on the newspapers to which we learned had over a year waiting list to purchase), etc. Candidates must gather the support of a team, and at times the current/former school committee members share campaign resources to help.
Simply put, the endorsement of those currently in office or those who held the office come with a wealth of knowledge about campaign logistics, fundraising, and navigating the election process. Whether or not residents agree with this endorsement, this support provides a significant advantage to candidates who receive it. It’s simply the reality of how local politics often works.
Therefore, I’m bewildered by some of the criticism I’m seeing in this campaign. It’s important to remember that endorsements come in many forms. Just as current and former committee members can offer support, so too can other groups within our community.
Let’s be clear: questioning a candidate’s integrity based solely on an endorsement from our dedicated educators is not only unfair, it’s a disservice to the very people who shape our children’s future.
The AEA represents teachers, nurses, support staff – our neighbors – who are deeply invested in the success of our schools.
Jake Tamarkin has made it clear he has not accepted direct donations from the AEA. To twist this endorsement into some kind of sinister plot is a desperate attempt to manipulate voters.
Instead of engaging in these baseless attacks, let’s look at Jake Tamarkin’s record. He’s consistently demonstrated:
- A Commitment to Transparency and Accountability: He’s attended countless meetings, listened, and asked thoughtful questions
- A Focus on Solutions, Not Rhetoric: He’s offered concrete proposals to address the challenges facing our schools, particularly during the budget crisis.
- A Deep Understanding of Financial Matters: His business/financial acumen is exactly what we need to navigate the complex realities of our school system.
- A Calm and Measured Demeanor: In the face of heated debate, he remains focused on finding common ground.
- A Dedication to the Community: He is an involved parent, who has poured countless hours into researching and understanding the needs of Andover.
Jake has demonstrated the integrity, intelligence, and dedication we need on the School Committee. Don’t let the negativity distract you from the facts. We need leaders who will prioritize our children’s education, not political gamesmanship. Jake Tamarkin is the candidate who will bring positive change to our schools.
