Andover Fire Rescue called in the Massachusetts HAZMAT team after responding to a lithium ion battery fire at the junction of Interstate 93 south and Interstate 495 south Tuesday.

The HAZMAT team “advised our members on scene to wrap the battery in our Emergency Vehicle (EV) Fire Blanket in order to completely extinguish the fire,” Andover Fire Rescue said in a social media post. “Lithium-ion batteries are very difficult to extinguish and pose a serious fire threat. The link below has more information on these batteries and how to operate and dispose of them properly.”

Extinguishing lithium ion battery fires is a complex process. Andover Fire said people who spot such a fire should get out of the area and call 911 immediately.
