Andover police assisted Massachusetts State Police in capturing a 41-year-old New York man who fled from a crash scene on Interstate 93 North Tuesday night.
The Town used its reverse 911 system to warn residents living in the area of Woodview Way to stay indoors, as the suspect had a history of firearms violations.
State Police and Andover Fire Rescue were called to the scene of the two-vehicle crash near exit 40 around 9:40 p.m. Shortly after police arrived, the suspect fled the scene and jumped a fence onto Woodview Way, according to recordings of scanner transmissions. Three people in the other vehicle were taken to Lawrence General hospital with minor injuries, according to State Police.
Police tracked the suspect into a wooded and swampy area. State Police called in the Airwing helicopter, which arrived around 10:35 to provide aerial support.
Andover and State Police arrested the man, whose identity has not been released, around 10:45 p.m. near 46 Greenwood Street. The suspect was taken to Lawrence General for a medical evaluation before being taken to the State Police barracks in Andover for booking.
