A man shot himself after barricading himself in a car on Interstate 495 in Andover, forcing Massachusetts State Police to close the highway for nearly two hours Tuesday evening.
The man, who name has not been released, was taken to Lawrence General Hospital. There were no updates on his condition early Wednesday morning. Police have also not said whether the man was wanted for a crime or given any other details on what lead to the standoff.
Crisis negotiators were called to the scene shortly after the highway was closed. The dark-color sedan was parked on the median near exit 40, which is near Interstate 93 and the Andover-Lawrence line. News helicopter footage showed police with guns drawn and aimed at the car. The man was the vehicle’s only occupant.
