Take extra care when you travel between exits 39 and 42 on Interstate 93 in Andover.

That’s the most dangerous stretch of the most dangerous road in Massachusetts, according to a recent analysis of federal government highway data. The road averages 1.2 crashes per day over just a 3.3-mile stretch, according to the Zebra. That makes it the riskiest stretch of roadway on the highway that runs 190 miles from Canton, MA to St. Johnsbury, VT, according to the National Highway Safety Agency.

In a 2022 Massachusetts Department of Transportation Board Meeting, Transportation Secretary Jamey Tesler said there had been “significant increase in roadway fatalities over the last couple of years and serious injuries.” Road fatalities rose by 50 percent in 2020, according to the Boston Herald, despite reduced traffic across most of Massachusetts roads and highways during the COVID-19 shutdowns.
