Watch the herring run
Sea-run herring start spawning in freshwater beginning in April and continuing through June, depending on water temperature. When Andover removed upstream and downstream dams in 2017, the Shawsheen River became a prime viewing spot for this annual wonder.
The best place to see the herring in Andover is from the pedestrian foot bridge over the river between Atria Senior Living at 15 Steven Street and Powder Mill Station at 14 Powder Mill Square. You can also volunteer to help Andover Trails, the Andover Conservation Commission, the Native Fish Coalition, and AVIS with their annual herring count (more info).
Cheer on Andover residents running the Boston Marathon
It’s Boston’s annual rite of spring, and more than 40 Andover residents will join 10,000+ runners signed up to run the 127th Boston Marathon. Check out last year’s Patch article on the best places to watch the marathon. Can’t make to watch in-person? Check Andover News on Monday and Tuesday to see how Andover runners fared.
Play some paintball
Meet at the Andover Youth Center at noon on Wednesday, April 19, have some pizza and then head to Ashland for two hours of paintball. Paintballers will be back in Andover by 5:30 p.m. It’s $80 for Andover residents and $90 for nonresidents (more info).
SRun the bases at Fenway with Andover Recreation
STEM day at Fenway park is on Thursday, April 20, and Andover Rec is offering Andover residents a chance to go to the game and participate in STEM-based activities at the ballpark before the 1:35 p.m. game between the Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins. It’s also kids run the bases day at Fenway. It’s $50 for Andover residents and $65 for nonresidents (more info),
Head to Memorial Hall Library
Andover’s library has more than just books: there are events and programs for all ages, ranging from a talk about the college financial aid process with Jim Femia to the weekly meeting of the Pokemon Club. See a complete list of vacation week events in This Week In Andover or on Memorial Hall Library’s Events page. Note: the library is closed Monday for Patriots Day.
Celebrate Earth Day 2023
Earth Day is on Saturday, April 22 this year, and there are a couple of ways you can celebrate in Andover:
- The 3rd Annual Andover Earth Day Clean-up Event runs from 8 a.m. until noon.
- There’s also a virtual Earth Day Author Talk with Louise Gray at 10 a.m. The topic is “Avocado Anxiety & Other Stories About Where Food Comes From.”
