Got plans for Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 16? You can make the most of the day by participating in various charity drives and volunteer efforts being organized by Andover School Committee member Sandis Wright and resident Stephanie Barry for Andover Service Day.

“We help compile several different volunteer opportunities for families to participate in honoring Martin Luther King Jr., embracing ‘a day on, not a day off’ on January 16th,” Barry, who has been coordinating the effort with Wright for the past three years, said in an email.

Among the events for this year’s service day:

  • Bancroft Elementary’s Kindergarten teacher Courtney Miller (email) will be participating with her class in the Repurposed Crayon Packs project from Project Giving Kids.
  • The volunteer list has already maxed out for the Lifting Spirits Miniature Horse Farm help opportunity, taking place on 1/16 at 10:00AM (owner Toni Hadad,
email, 23 Pleasant Street, Andover, MA 01810).  Volunteers help around the farm and with the animals.
  • Marinna Connolly (email) helps lead the effort to create Jared Boxes, shoeboxes filled with games, toys, activities and notes for children undergoing medical treatment in a hospital.
  • Girl Scout troop #82389 will be working on a few different projects for Service Day, including putting together toiletry bags for shelter residents.  They’re led by Sarah Robinson (email).

In addition to events like a cleanup and a birthday lunch at Andover elder services, there are “every day events” residents can join if they are unavailable on the 16th. A complete list of the events is available on the group’s Website.
