The math curriculum Andover Public Schools adopted for elementary students at the start of the school year “meets expectations,” according to a report released Thursday by a nonprofit that helps teachers select materials to improve K-12 education.
EdReports.org’s review was divided into sections covering grades K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. Overall, Eureka Math2, or Eureka Math Squared, was meeting expectations in all three sections. The report did, however, note the curriculum was only partially meeting expectations in student assessment.
The Andover School Committee approved the curriculum adoption last summer, and APS held meetings for parents at the start of the current school year. Katherine Richard, head of APS math program, told the committee the district had considered 32 curriculums and received an unprecedented amount of teacher feedback before settling on Eureka Math Squared. The district will consider Eureka Math Squared when it reviews math curriculums for middle and high school students.
The curriculum was launched by Great Minds PBC in 2021 and, according to the company, “designed to highlight how math is a part of everyday life while also ensuring that students build enduring math knowledge.” Eureka Math, the predecessor to Eureka Math Squared, was the most-widely used elementary school math curriculum in the U.S. and approved for use in Massachusetts by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in June 2021.
