The crossing gates were still down and signals “appeared to be working” when an 85-year-old man was struck and killed by a train in Andover last week, the Essex County District Attorney’s office said in a news release.

Zhongli Zhang, of Railroad Street, was walking around 4:30 p.m. on July 27 and waited for a southbound MBTA train to pass. As he crossed the tracks, he was hit by a northbound Amtrak Downeaster train passing through Andover immediately after the southbound train cleared the Railroad and Essex Street junction.

The incident remains under investigation, the D.A.’s office said.
