Andover DPW and Water Division worked on repairs throughout most of the day Friday after a “major” water line break on Lowell Street near the Town’s water treatment plant Thursday night.

Andover DPW Director Chris Cronin said the break happened in a 12-inch water main just before 8 p.m. Thursday. The break occurred near an older, 10-inch water line.

“That was really what caused the discolored water issue,” Cronin said Friday morning. “The problem is isolated to the West distribution system, but due to its proximity to the water treatment plant it’ll be problematic for that system for a while.”

Water service was shut off for several hours Friday morning. Lowell Street was closed from Haggetts Pond Road to Tessier Drive for most of Friday for repairs and repaving. The latest updates are posted on the Town’s Website.

West Andover residents were warned they see discolored water throughout Friday. The water division also flushed hydrants throughout the day to reduce the discoloration.
