An Andover doctor can no longer can no longer perform independent surgeries after the state’s medical review board found he anesthetized a patient before an operation was ready to proceed.

The Massachusetts Board of Medicine also reprimanded Dr. William A. Mitchell’s medical license in the July 13 consent order for maintaining improper records for three patients undergoing surgery. Among other functions, the investigates complaints and determines sanctions. 

Mitchell is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with a private practice in Andover, and is affiliated with Newton-Wellesley Hospital, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine said in a news release. He has been licensed in Massachusetts since 1984 and specializes in sports medicine.
