Andover residents Kavita Goyal and Shawna McCloskey were among the winners of 2023 Commonwealth Heroine awards presented by Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women Friday.

The awards, which were presented at the State House, recognize the work of the “unsung heroines who are the backbone of our communities.” Rep. Tram T. Nguyen (D-Andover) nominated Goyal, who chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission in Andover, which works to combat the realities of racism and intolerance in the community.

Rep. Frank Moran (D-Lawrence) nominated McCloskey, who has been working as a social worker at the Robb Senior Center in Andover for over 20 years. During that time, she has coordinated 236,430 meals and connected seniors with 40,000 rides or other forms of transportation.

Andover Girl Scout Elected To Board

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts elected Natalia Salinas of Andover to serve as a girl member of the organization’s Board of Directors during the council’s Annual Meeting on May 11 She was one of four new girl board members elected to the board.

Andover Gets Rail Trail Grant

The MassTrails Grant Program awarded Andover a $500,000 grant to construct the Haggetts Pond Rail Trail. The rail bed will become a 4,500-foot-long trail along the western side of Haggetts Pond into a multi-use path. The trail will end at a new boardwalk overlooking the pond.
