A retired Andover math teacher who volunteered in Town elections and for other local charities was hit and killed by a car in North Reading last week.

“She had a great sense of fun — just a wonderful person,” Town Clerk Austin Simko said at the start of Monday’s select board meeting. “I know a lot of people are going to miss her, including me.”

Details of the crash were not immediately available.

After graduating from Temple University, Lugas, 79 worked as a math teacher in Philadelphia, according to her obituary. After moving to Boston, she was a computer programmer at MIT and other companies. She volunteered to teach computer literacy and volunteered for several local charities, most recently for Project Hoe Again and Uncommon Threads.
