“Unavoidable construction delays” are forcing a sports lounge that will feature six golf simulators to postpone its opening in Andover’s Shawsheen Plaza.

The Andover Select Board approved Matchplay Golf & Sports Lounge’s request for an extension to the six-month window to claim a liquor license approved in November at its meeting Monday.

The request was “based upon Matchplay facing several unexpected delays and construction difficulties in the space,” owner Andrew Zappala said in a June 9 letter to the select board. “Construction is moving diligently, and construction is expected to be completed by September 15, 2023.”

The business is located in a space that has been empty for more than six years since Rite Aid closed. Matchplay will have seating for 112 and a full bar and food menu. Andover would be the chain’s sixth location.

Following Monday’s extension approval, Matchplay has until Oct. 1 to open before having to forfeit the liquor license.
